The short answer
For a first independent Lake Como day trip from Milan, start with Varenna if your main wish is a village by the water. Choose Como if you want a city stroll with the lake alongside it. Make Bellagio your main stop when you are happy to organise the day around a ferry connection.
Our planning recommendation is one base and one optional second stop. Leave room for lunch. A photograph takes a second to save; getting between the places in it can take a substantial part of your day.

Trenord lists direct Milan–Varenna services taking about an hour. Its network also serves Como from Milan, including services associated with Cadorna and Centrale. The station names matter: Como Lago and Como San Giovanni are different stops. Use the official route finder to choose the journey that fits where you are staying.
These are suggested styles of day, not a ranking of which town is most beautiful. If a lakeside lunch is the thing you actually want, do not turn it into a reward you only get after completing three towns.
A manageable day from Milan
- Before leaving: choose your outward train and at least two possible return services. Check live disruption notices, not just a screenshot of an old timetable.
- On arrival: spend the first part of the day in your chosen town. Take your walk and have lunch before committing to another crossing.
- Optional afternoon: add Bellagio from Varenna only if the outward and return ferries leave a comfortable margin for your train. Keep the second stop optional if queues, weather or tired legs change the plan.
- Return: leave enough time between the ferry and the railway station to walk, find the platform and deal with a delay.
This is a flexible outline rather than a timed itinerary. Put your actual train and ferry times into it when you know your travel date. A slower day can still include the lake views you came for.
Check the ferry before adding another town
Navigazione Laghi publishes separate Lake Como timetables, including central-lake ferries and ship or fast services. Match the validity dates and weekday or holiday schedule to your trip. Do not assume that a route shown on a summer pin runs at the same time in autumn.
Check the exact departure pier, travel time, ticket type and last useful return. A departure that reaches your second town is only half the plan. You also need a sensible way back to your train. If the connections leave little room to enjoy the place, keep the day in one town.
When a guided day trip makes sense
A guided excursion is an option if you prefer somebody else to coordinate coach and ferry connections and you are comfortable with fixed stops. It is a different pace from our one-base suggestion.

If your priority is a long lunch, a particular villa or a slow afternoon, compare the excursion's stopping times with an independent visit. Do not assume a villa admission is included because the tour passes attractive buildings along the shore.
Before you book
- Write down the Milan station, lake arrival station and return station.
- Use the ferry timetable that covers your date.
- If one villa is essential, check its own admission and opening arrangements before filling the rest of the day.
- Budget separately for meals and anything absent from the ticket's inclusions.
- Check walking requirements with the operator if stairs, slopes or boarding a boat could be difficult.
