The short answer
Choose the Bernina Express for the named panoramic-train experience. Look at regional trains when your priority is planning your own journey along the Bernina line. Choose a guided excursion from Milan if you want the road transfers and train segment arranged together.
Before paying, check the service, the stations and the carriage type. A red train in a photograph does not tell you which ticket is included.

Our recommendation: choose the route you want to see before choosing the product. The words “Swiss Alps” cover much more ground than one train segment.
When to choose the Bernina Express
RhB describes the Bernina Express as a panoramic service, with routes including Chur–Tirano and St. Moritz–Tirano. Those are different lengths and do not cover exactly the same journey. If a particular viaduct or stretch of railway is your reason for going, match it to the route you are buying.
Use the official Bernina Express booking information to arrange the travel ticket and required seat reservation. Do not assume a rail pass or another ticket automatically supplies a reserved panoramic seat.
Autumn 2026 route note: RhB currently announces a diversion for trains 951 and 952 from 29 October to 13 November via Vereina. If your trip falls in that period, check the current route before booking around a particular view.
When regional trains are worth comparing
Regional services are a separate product. RhB's regional reservation page specifically says these are not Bernina Express trains and do not have panoramic cars or the Express's additional onboard services.
Regional trains can suit a journey that you plan around individual stops. That still requires checking each connection and whether your ticket allows the itinerary you have in mind. “Flexible” should not mean arriving without knowing how you will finish the day.
Do not rely on old advice saying regional trains never have seat reservations. RhB now offers regional reservations between St. Moritz and Tirano and recommends them when demand is high. Read the current regional reservation rules for your connection.
What a Milan day excursion includes
The Tiqets panoramic-tour listing below describes a coach journey from Milan to St. Moritz, a Bernina Express train ticket from St. Moritz to Tirano and a coach return to Milan. Its advertised duration is around twelve hours. Meals are excluded.
That may suit you if coordinating the transfers is the part you want to hand over. It also means a substantial day out, with road travel as well as the railway. Do not interpret “from Milan” as one panoramic train running directly from Milan through the whole route.

Read the live itinerary, meeting point and passenger requirements. Check any documents needed for your own cross-border journey before booking. If a long coach-and-train day sounds exhausting, consider staying nearer the railway or choosing a different day trip.
Plan for the whole day, not one photograph
Start by writing down your overnight base, the station where you will board and where you need to finish. Then add the railway segment and every connection around it. Include time to get to the platform, eat and return to your accommodation.
Choose a season for the scenery you actually want. The snowy photograph on this page illustrates one winter scene; it is not a promise of snow on your travel date. Look at the forecast and current railway notices close to departure.
If you want stops along the way, check the onward timetable before getting off. If you want to stay seated and enjoy a continuous panoramic journey, make the reservation part of the initial plan. These are different travel styles, and either can be the right choice.
